History

The Sweetwater Woman’s Club (SWC) was founded March 23, 1911, originally as a sewing club with a membership fee of 25¢ a year. A Clubhouse was built by 1913, only to be swept away, furnishings and all, by floodwaters when the Sweetwater Dam broke in 1916.

During World War I, the Club was suspended temporarily and became a Red Cross Auxiliary. In May, 1919, the Club again became the SWC and expanded its educational, cultural and charitable mission. The Sweetwater Valley Fruit Company gave us our current site in an eucalyptus grove in 1933. A new, completely furnished clubhouse was built and opened for its first meeting at its current location in June, 1934.

Well known architect Cliff May, known for his Hacienda style buildings, designed the clubhouse with open beamed ceilings and French doors, making it a warm environment for special events.

During World War II, the Clubhouse, with the assistance again of the Red Cross, served as a canteen for servicemen. Later, the Club held a yearly antique show. An evening section was organized in 1963 but dissolved in 1990. The day section continues to be an active and contributing organization of the local community.

The Sweetwater Woman’s Club became a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) and the California Federation of Women’s Clubs (CFWC) in 1911. The Southern District was formed and became part of the CFWC in 1958.
